Fashion Student Confidential

Fashion Group International hosted Dallas Career Day last week and fashion schools from all over Texas and surrounding states participated in a series of competitions with scholarships, computers, and a trip to Paris on the line. There were seminars, a grand fashion show, and always most interesting to me: the fashion students.

Having been to two fashion schools here in the DFW as well as this event a few years, I can honestly say that the fashion student is a rare breed. Everyone always seems either really trendy or really not-trying-because-I-was-sewing-till-5AM but then you have the ones that set the trends, the ones that really stand out...

If 80's hairstyles are accepted by society, then why can't bold, unnatural colors also be a part of the work place? It doesn't make you any less competent or skillful. Instead it's seen as a deviant style that can only be adopted by the deviants of society...

Two guys, two extremes.

BUTT RUFFLES!

Who knew this age old style could come back? I, for one, say let's do it! Gals and guys alike, if you got a big butt, don't be afraid to flaunt it. If it's a barely-there-booty, add some ruffles and accentuate it. I know I'm kinda standing alone on this one, but I'm tired of fashion not celebrating a woman's body in it's entirety...

BUTT Back to the original topic of the fashion student... There's a movie called Art School Confidential and you've probably heard/seen it but for those who haven't (rent it), it's a parody movie (with a plot) about art school and college art students with the usual (nuts) stereotypes thrown in. I can see some of you nodding your heads... I propose a similar movie about fashion students - maybe even in documentary style. How do you go about making something like that?

And if you're a big fashion school geek like me, check out this Japanese manga (comic) called Paradise Kiss. Quick Rundown: Pretty but studious girl gets pulled into the the fashion world when she's asked to model for a big school show. Lots of memorable characters, school girl romance, and even the important questions like "What is there after fashion school?"

It's my favorite manga of all time! You can tell that the mangaka (artist) Ai Yazawa studied fashion sketching in college. You can read the first few chapters here @ MangaFox.com. If anything else, fashion manga is a great escape from your daily toil that you can relate to if you're a fashionista and the clothing is always cute and fresh.
