Weekly Geek Out ~ 10/25

GEEKY INSPIRATION

MUSIC GEEK

I'm not a fan of Kat Graham but I can't ignore fashion-themed music videos. This one has a lot of sequins and some make-overs.

Over all it has a fun feel and enough attitude that it could, especially with a good remix, become runway music.

LIFESTYLE GEEK
It's no mystery that I'm a big geek for androgyny and gender-bending girls so of course this editorial from Vogue Paris October 2010 captivated me for a good 10 minutes.

The object of my attraction is, of course, the model with the short, fluffy hair.
Her styling and overall attitude dares you to fall in lust.

Style & Tips from Fashion 2.0 Dallas Debut

Earlier this month, Jean Pratt, founder of the StyleObserver.com and pictured to the left with me, launched an extension of the very successful New York Fashion 2.0 here in Dallas.

The group centers around the changes in the fashion industry due technology. To join, you have to be fashion professional in Dallas with an online presence.

The first meeting featured a panel of local fashion entrepreneurs talking about online fashion retailing and the impact of social media.

It was agreed that Facebook and Twitter have changed the way people think about PR. Magazines aren't the only outlet for fashion companies; businesses now have to consider blogs and Facebook fanpages. But even though the speed at which we transmit information has changed, sometimes you can't beat good old word-of-mouth.

The biggest tip they gave for online PR was unplug and take time to think. Just because all the work is online doesn't mean that all the thinking should be.

The next meetup is on November 9th but the topic hasn't been posted yet.

And to the right is a little event style snap. I loved her slouchy top, scarf and fox tail bag accessory (which has been really big at anime conventions for years).

[STREET SNAP] Dallas Apparel & Accessories Market

Street Style, Fashion BlogDoesn't she look cool? I love that touch of sheer & lace.

Does it count as Dallas Street Snap if she's a buyer from Las Vegas?

I went to the Dallas Market Center yesterday for a fashion show that was aimed at all the buyers that were in town. For anyone who doesn't know, the Apparel & Accessories Market is when buyers from big stores and small boutiques come to town to see all the designers who have showrooms in the Dallas Market Center.

The October market is biggest in Dallas because the weather is finally agreeable and buyers shop for the coming Spring season. Though I heard some buyers were also making last minute purchases for the Holiday season.

Top 10 Tuesday: Quick Costumes You Can Pull Out of Your Closet

Halloween has been my favorite holiday since I could form an opinion. You would think I'd be the person who plans their costume months in advance, slowly sewing something original from scratch.

Nope. I'm last minute girl. I dig through my closet Halloween afternoon trying to put something together. Some of my success stories include Vampire Executive, Gay Pride Witch, and Undead Sorceress.

This Fall, a lot of the trends can easily translate into costumes so open your closet, pull out some permanent markers, and don't forget to make a quick run to your local dollar store or CVS.

Permanent markers? Don't underestimate the power of words on a t-shirt.

Fashion Students Blogging as a [SMART] Career Move

There's a lot of chances here in Dallas for fashion students to network with people in the industry. But how do you make them remember you, a lowly fashion student?

My mentor and marketing teacher preaches to every one of her classes the importance of a simple business card. But what would it say? Jane Smith, Fashion Student?

A new friend, classmate and n00b fashion blogger recently told me that while he loves fashion, he wasn't sure about his career path in the fashion world. He didn't know where to concentrate and thus wasn't sure what to put on the card.

Why not his blog? It's a free and easy channel for his skills in fashion research and styling. And not just him, but fashion students in general.

[DAILY OUTFIT] Shiny New Shirt, Not-So-Shiny New Plans

I'm an impulsive person. The shirt on the left is a crop top with sequins and lace and buying it meant being late to a family function on Sunday. That's not so bad, but sometimes I tend to act passionately on a whim. Starting Dallas Fashion Connect is a good example.

I didn't just jump the gun, I leaped in front of the damn bullet. I started a website with the mission of becoming a fashion directory of people and events in Dallas - I figured we needed one.

I never expected the website to be bigger than what I could handle. I denied it to myself for weeks because I am very passionate about helping out the local fashion scene.

I still want to make Dallas Fashion Connect a reality but maybe this time I'll think before I leap and have a set plan with set goals for my website.

And it might be better if I don't start a new venture and school at the same time. I forgot how much work a few classes can be!

Top 10 Tuesday: Marie Claire Nov 2010 Highlights

The loft building where I work has a magazine exchange shelf next to the mailboxes - "Take One. Leave One." While I didn't have a magazine to drop at the moment, I happily picked up Marie Claire Nov 2010.

I honestly haven't picked up a magazine for more than 5 minutes since I discovered Google Reader, but there was a nostalgic bliss with every glossy page I turned. That's probably why I dedicated this Top 10 to Marie Claire - the first magazine I've read cover to cover in a long time.

1: The Cover

I know the strong shoulder is here to stay for a while so it's not a bad idea to add a little support to your shirts.

[TOP 10 TUESDAY] Must-Have Looks From the Polish Fall 2010 Fashion Show at Barney's New York

Have you gone Fall shopping yet? Have you started stocking up on the latest trends?

Polish, a local organization that reaches out to young professionals, had a couple of ideas last Thursday during the fashion show they hosted at Barney's New York. The runway was dominated by trends - neutrals and military - all while maintaining that cute and effortless feel that comes from street style. If you're having trouble shopping for the coming season, check out my Top 10 off the Polish runway.
  1. Proenza Schouler Painted Pants
We all know that artsy, painted prints are back on the rise, but these pants are more than just print. You can feel the hard, shiny texture of the layered paint.
Don't have $550 to spend? Take some skinny jeans and pretend you're Jackson Pollock for a day.
  2. Isabel Marant Black Skirt
It's hard to see the detail in the picture but the skirt is made up of thick individual threads. Each one swayed tentatively as the model walked. It had a bit of a bohemian feel, reminding us that even in a season dominated by structure, we shouldn't forget about rhythm.

  3. Geren Ford Wavy Print Dress
Everyone needs a few pieces they can throw on quickly and still look great. This dress is for those Saturdays where you need a touch of casual style - like you're running errands and meeting that special someone for lunch.
  4. Marc by Marc Jacobs Parka
It has all the utility you're probably not looking for but if you remember the cold rainy Novembers we're had in Dallas, it'd be a trendy investment.

  6. Sea, New York Brown Leather Skirt
For the longest time, the black mini - in all it's textures and styles - has dominated wardrobes across the fashion world. Maybe it's time for a change, especially with the military color palette.

  7. Edun Military Parka
I know it's another parka but I love hoods and I love the way it's styled.

  8. Dries Van Noten Rabbit Fur Vest
IT'S SO SOFT! ... I mean so on-trend for Fall 2010 (^__^) It's one of those pieces people easily overdo by not keeping the outfit simple. Although, I don't recommend matching boots lest you look like a Snow Bunny.

  9. Democracy of Nevermind Faux Fur Vest & Marc by Marc Jacob Lace Blouse
This look inspired me to try and wear a little white (but we'll see how long that lasts). FYI: The vest is $130 and it comes in dark brown.
  10. Alexander Wang Goddess Scarf Dress
