[GEEK OUT] Victorian Geek and Vampire Colors Inspire Fall Fashion

Sirius Black and the Green Goblin are back from the dead! ...And wearing geek-inspired Prada. Although it's not my "thing", I'm an admirer of the Steampunk style and fantasy. Alex, on the other hand, is quickly falling with the fiction and aesthetic - she might even dress up as soon as we have money to spend on the clothing and accessories. She is currently making a wishlist with Prada's new Fall menswear collection.

I love "what if" fiction - this one just happens to come with a wardrobe. The main Steampunk details to note in the collection are the circular glasses, high collars and, the double-breasted suit and vest. I foresee menswear getting more dapper as the fashion seasons pass, and this Steampunk-inspired collection is the perfect example that men need more choices.

The geekery continues with a follow up to my Top 8 Vampires post. After flipping through Marie Claire and Bazaar for the past two months, I noticed a trend in deep vampy reds and purples. In vampire fiction, the deep red, burgundies and plums have always been symbolic of the blood and luxury that is normally romanticized in the stories. Personally, I wouldn't mind a dozen women walking down the street with blood red lips and dark purple nails, or vice versa.

I've currently fallen in love with Essie's Devils' Advocate and wouldn't mind a lipstick to match.

[TOP 10 TUESDAY]
Seeing Red at #NYFW (For Valentine's Day)

Red is the color of fiery passion, romance and power. It's symbolic of the blood that pumps through our veins and keeps up alive. It's also my favorite color so I've been loving it's presence on the runways as well as people's lips.

Red is also the quintessential Valentine's Day color as it is the color of love. I'm not really into commercial holidays but I broke down and bought Alex roses and chocolate. I prefer showing my love throughout the year with random little gestures.

But in honor of love, commercial holidays and my favorite color, I picked out my favorite looks from New York Fashion Week that really reflected RED.

Starting with power on the right, this Diesel Black Gold ensemble reminded me of Alice from Resident Evil. I half-expected her to take a gun out of that bag and start shooting zombies. It must be the juxtaposition of the hardware with the flow and texture of the skirt.

The range of reds next season will across the spectrum - from bright fire engine to deep burgundy wine. Bright red, though, looks really great in prints while deeper shades look better on structured, elegant pieces. And to my personal, pleasant surprise, the gothic combination of red and black still seems to prevail after all this time.

Super Expensive Silly Bands & Hermoine Is Hot

Let's Cover the World in Gold

Let me start by saying this picture is absolutely captivating - everything from her attitude to the outfit. Be still my little gay heart...

FYI: After years of silver, gold has finally hit as the IT metallic. It's no longer just an accent, it can dominate your outfit just don't overdo it i.e. the first picture vs the third one below. "Gold, it makes the world go round..." Listen to the song from Repo: The Genetic Opera to the right.

Marc Jacobs Does Silly Bandz

Thanks to Hearty Chic for the Images

If you haven't heard by now, Marc Jacobs has jumped on the Silly Bandz bandwagon. It's a five piece set that feature MMJ charms to assure you that you didn't just overpay for silly bandz. They're $15 on ShopBop.com. I like them but Alex wants us to get matching superhero ones. Those are $1 LOL.

Harry Potter is Coming to an End

Harry Potter, Emma WatsonHermione Who? I went to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt.1 last night, and I teared up when I realized that this is it: the last book, the last 2 movies. It's been a magical 9 years watching this book series I love take life.

I also realized how hot Emma Watson has gotten over the past couple of years. She's one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood at age 20, and since Burberry, a bit of a fashion icon. The new Twiggy-esque haircut only emphasizes it. I think it's cute but Alex took one look at it, pouted, and shouted, "Hermione Hair?!" We both agreed, however, that it would suck if she quit acting.

W Magazine Launches Fashion On Film

Last Wednesday, W magazine launched an online film festival for the fashionable: Fashion on Film. It's got everything from video lookbooks to behind the scenes at fashion shows. The title that first caught my eye was Modelgeddon.

"LOVE magazine teams up with director James Lima and Donatella Versace in Modelgeddon, a world where supermodels Alessandra Ambrosio, Ana Beatriz Barros, Claudia Mason and Julie Ordon turn into superheroes." - It reminds me of those B-Movies where women fight for the viewer's pleasure, namely Bitchslap. I'll never say "No" to women kicking ass (or falling buildings) in tight, zipper-embossed jeans.

[TOP 10 TUESDAY] Must-Have Looks From the Polish Fall 2010 Fashion Show at Barney's New York

Have you gone Fall shopping yet? Have you started stocking up on the latest trends?

Polish, a local organization that reaches out to young professionals, had a couple of ideas last Thursday during the fashion show they hosted at Barney's New York. The runway was dominated by trends - neutrals and military - all while maintaining that cute and effortless feel that comes from street style. If you're having trouble shopping for the coming season, check out my Top 10 off the Polish runway.
  1. Proenza Schouler Painted Pants
We all know that artsy, painted prints are back on the rise, but these pants are more than just print. You can feel the hard, shiny texture of the layered paint.
Don't have $550 to spend? Take some skinny jeans and pretend you're Jackson Pollock for a day.
  2. Isabel Marant Black Skirt
It's hard to see the detail in the picture but the skirt is made up of thick individual threads. Each one swayed tentatively as the model walked. It had a bit of a bohemian feel, reminding us that even in a season dominated by structure, we shouldn't forget about rhythm.

  3. Geren Ford Wavy Print Dress
Everyone needs a few pieces they can throw on quickly and still look great. This dress is for those Saturdays where you need a touch of casual style - like you're running errands and meeting that special someone for lunch.
  4. Marc by Marc Jacobs Parka
It has all the utility you're probably not looking for but if you remember the cold rainy Novembers we're had in Dallas, it'd be a trendy investment.

  6. Sea, New York Brown Leather Skirt
For the longest time, the black mini - in all it's textures and styles - has dominated wardrobes across the fashion world. Maybe it's time for a change, especially with the military color palette.

I know it's another parka but I love hoods and I love the way it's styled.

  8. Dries Van Noten Rabbit Fur Vest
IT'S SO SOFT! ... I mean so on-trend for Fall 2010 (^__^) It's one of those pieces people easily overdo by not keeping the outfit simple. Although, I don't recommend matching boots lest you look like a Snow Bunny.

  9. Democracy of Nevermind Faux Fur Vest & Marc by Marc Jacob Lace Blouse
This look inspired me to try and wear a little white (but we'll see how long that lasts). FYI: The vest is $130 and it comes in dark brown.

She's Wearing Drag & I Just Can't Help Myself

It's no secret that I'm as deeply attracted to girls in drag as cute girls. Truthfully, I have yet to meet a type of girl I don't like. But gayness aside, I did a little mental dance back in Spring when Menswear was cited as one of the upcoming trends for Fall. There is just something indescribably sexy about a women in a crisp white shirt, suit pants, and a tie. I think most guys and straight women who have crushes on butch girls would agree.

Take, for example, the following pics from Vogue Homme Japan.

This is Lady Gaga's alter ego: male model Jo Calderone. I know performing drag kings that don't quite pull off the transformation like she does, but they'll agree that it's an art. I think she looks downright sexy in drag and the spread makes a lot of (fashion) sense when you consider the trends.

Also this month, PAPER Magazine features Michelle Trachtenberg plus 11 more ladies getting "In Touch With Their Masculine Side". She sure has come a long way since Harriet the Spy. Apparently, Trachtenberg had no problem impersonating a dude for a day. "My sense of humor is very dirty," she told the magazine, stroking her facial hair. "Most of my friends are guys, except a handful of girls. I talk and think like a boy."

Other notable ladies include model Jenny Shimizu (who has gotten "in touch" with her masculine side for countless magazines) and designer Charlotte Ronson (who seems to channel her DJ twin sister in this pic). You can read the article and view the rest of the pics here.

Masculine Fashion,Boy Style,Menswear,Fashion Blog,Boi If you're looking to "drag it up" for the Fall season, don't forget that button up shirt is a timeless classic. Pair it with the basic slacks and suspenders or add a faux-leather vest for the harder look like Jo.

To get right hair to compliment this look, take out the hairspray and a hair tie. Make sure to poof the top like Tracy from the Real L Word on the cover of BOUND magazine.

It'll go really well with a crisp white shirt and trousers, but don't be surprised if cute baby-lesbians hit on you. Wink and take it as a compliment.

Big Hats & Lady Gaga Costumes Are In!

Lady Gaga Costumes Debut for Halloween

You know you've hit Pop Icon status when people want to dress up like you.
Costume Craze proudly debuted their new officially licensed Lady Gaga costumes on their blog earlier this week. This is going to make for an interesting Halloween, especially in the gay-borhood. The full outfits run $45-57 while single accessories run $7-$17. I'm kinda drawn to the $9 Hair Bow Clip myself. FYI they're now taking pre-orders.
