Weekly Geek Out ~ 5/18/10

I didn't get a chance to blog so much last week due to some new clients in my web design business. Check out the website I just finished: Something4EveryoneBoutique.com - But I'm back this week, hopefully with more power! If not, then just more coffee and chocolate!

Fashion Blog, Oak Black Label, Mesh Fashion Blog, Oak Black Label, Mesh, Texas Summer

So to start off, I saw these two pieces from Oak Black Label over at WithAsianStereotypes. It gave me some inspiration for wearing black in the blistering Texas heat, plus mesh seems to drape really well. All I need now is the right sandals to kick off this summer. Although, if you're anywhere near Texas right now, you know that summer has already started without us. Damn muggy Sundays...

Naomi Campbell, Vanity Fair SOMEONE CALL THE FASHION POLICE!

And please write Ms. Campbell a ticket for trying to hard at the Vanity Fair party in Cannes. What is the first thing any good stylist will tell you? (Other than burn your closet.) Cute, outrageous trends are great for parties - just don't do them all at once. Funny thing is that I like what she's wearing as individual pieces, after all it's Valentino Couture. Thanks to Racked.com for the image, where 85% voted "Who Did This to You?"

So UK rapper Lady Sovereign is gay... Seriously cool but not a big surprise - she's been on my gaydar since "Luv Me or Hate Me" was released back in 2006. Her first gay interview since she came out on Celebrity Big Brother was the cover story for British lesbian magazine Diva. She told Diva that when magazines asked about her sexuality, questions would get stopped by her publicist... "It was my choice, too, because I was a bit worried about it but now I don’t really give a s–t... But it was a bit scary back then because some people do have horrible opinions." And they still do, but I think more and more, people are starting to realize that the music is good no matter if it's a guy or a girl singing it. On the flip-side, it seems that a lot of women are claiming bisexuality to get their names back in the media and promote their new music/movies/products. Looking at the cover, you gotta admit Lady Sovereign has great style. As a blend of punk, hip-hop, and emo-pop, it really reflects her music style. I weep, though, because I couldn't figure out who makes that giant zipper necklace nor have I been able to find a similar online. I'll have to find the magazine... Enjoy some of her music. "Luv Me or Hate Me" & "So Human" are my favorites.

As far as news goes, this is actually quite old (2007) but in terms of inspiration, it's timeless. For the Urban Outfitters Urban Renewal Project, Mari Santos transformed oversized t-shirts into cute tops and sweet dresses - these two were my favorites. If you're looking to give your closet a breath of life without breaking the bank, use an oversized band t-shirt from a thrift store or take one of your boy/girlfriend's (nonsentimental) tees. Remember, t-shirt jersey is great for hot summers and it's a great way to kill time away from school.

If you're feeling weighed down by the adolescent angst (in your early 20's) of trying to be cool and glamorous, try these slouchy, printed tees by fashion blogger and alternative model Audrey Kitching’s. She says the line is "Barbie meets Sid Vicious" - which would be the one-on-one of a lifetime. The tees are really messed up, though, sporting statements like "troublemaker" and "someone somewhere is sick of your shit" but that's what makes them so lovable. And at $35 each, the statement won't break your wallet. I'm really considering "someone somewhere is sick of your shit" or "punk rock ruined me"...

Call me old-fashioned but I love SJP in this 80's look. Tell me again what's wrong with tulle and corsets? My mom was still a teenager in the 80's when I was born so this fashion has always stayed with me. This production picture from Sex and the City 2 has me geeking out because I can't believe the theater date is so close yet so far away. When the first one came out, I had just broken up with my GF of 2 years. It was the first movie I'd watched alone in a long time. Weird enough, the movie was good therapy. Then I rewatched it with the girl who would become my ex's new partner - yeah, you read that right lol - at that point, I really, really wanted to get out of Dallas. But I'm happy I didn't flee because now I have a super-supportive and understanding girlfriend who will go opening night with me! ... In exchange for watching Robin Hood and Iron Man this weekend ... Like I mind lol.

Talk Nerdy to Me

The Japanese publication POPEYE recently did an editorial called "Parka and Glasses". It's very geek chic, bringing in that nerdy mix-and-match stereotype. It also concentrates a lot on layering and neutral colors.

[SHOP GEEK]
"HEY MACARENA!" ... Knock It Off!

Christian Louboutin,Macarena Wedges,Chain Wedges,Fashion Blog,Style Geek To quote Cafe Fashionista: "...if we have learned just one thing from the charming Coco Chanel during our short years on earth, it is that chain detailing can change your life..." And it was in that post that I fell in love with these Macarena Chain Wedges. But, sadly, I'm not the kinda girl that can afford Christian Louboutin (pictured to the left) @ $625... Not even the perfect pair of summer shoes - they're so classy and rock and roll at the same time but my paycheck barely grazes $550 every two weeks. Erika, however, has the answer as she also posted Spiegel’s Chain Wedge Sandals (pictured below) @ $64. Now we're talking!

Christian Louboutin,Macarena Wedges,Chain Wedges,Fashion Blog,Style Geek
Upon doing a little more searching, I found the same pair cheaper at Journeys.com and, for those who still don't have $50, Electrique Boutique and E-Bay are selling some chain wedges in the same genus as Louboutin. So what's your price point? Keep in mind that the cheaper your shoes, the cheaper the quality... usually - sometimes expensive shoes will break just as easily but that's another story.

[OOTD] And if there was no tomorrow ... Almost like when your time was borrowed ...

Fashion Blog,Daily Outfit,Style Geek,OOTD So I'm working on this thing called posing cuz I'm not very good at it. (>_<) Below is some new music from Lindsay Lohan. My girlfriend and I were just talking about how cool she USE to be lol... like in the Parent Trap & Mean Girls days. I still think she could have been really great, a really high paid actress, once upon a time.

Funny thing about her new song, it almost sounds like she's saying, "I can't stop thinking about her..." Some lesbian websites (and not just me) theorize that it's about Samantha Ronson. I think they made a cute couple... wish it would have lasted.

Weekly Geek Out ~ 5/7/10

Hello & Welcome to my Stream of Conciousness aka My Weekly Geek Out. I've been unable to keep up regular posts right now because I've taken on more web and graphic design gigs so pay of some debt... caused by a mix of driving very very fast and my closet. *cradles new purse* But I can't imagine not being busy! I have two fashion shows here in Dallas to cover tonight and one show from last week pending.

Boo! Did I scare you? I was speechless when I saw this, teetering on whether I liked it or not. I'm not a Kelis fan to begin with but there's something off about this look. Is she trying to be Lady Gaga or is outrageous the thing now? It is, I know. In the end, I just decided that she looked like a dinosaur and would have look SOOO much better without the tux jacket. I know it was red carpet but the jacket does not make it any more appropriate. To see a larger view, check out The New-Kidz Blog.

Kurt Cobain is back the from the dead! McQ, motivated by the work of Alexander McQueen, has released its lookbook for the Fall 2010 collection. The other looks are undoubtedly grunge and remind me of the guys Cher was dissing at the beginning of the Clueless movie. Grunge isn't a bad look if you remember that it's about layering and looking like it didn't take you long to get dressed but secretly you know that you were going back and forth between the Cheetah print and a solid jacket. Even if MCQ only did one animal prints, it really peps up the grunge... which defeats the idea of grunge, right?

Speaking of pepping up grunge, Tokyo Fashion News found these two on different days in Harajuku, but I'm sure you notice the main similarity... The Tassel! It's very cute but I wonder what kinda look I'd get if I walked around with tassels on my neck. Hmmm... Idea for next week. The question is: does it look better in the guys grunge look or with the girl who's more clean cut? Click the pics to see the full outfits. Now I need to go borrow my mom's curtain tassels.

This dress is made out of coffee filters. Back on Earth Day, Dallas held an eco-friendly fashion show (at noon on a Thursday so I couldn't go) with student pieces from local fashion schools. Sophomore student Allison Mayes from UNT won the 2nd Place with this dress made out of hand dyed coffee filters, recycled fabric, feathers, and twigs. As I sit here drinking my own cup of joe, I wonder it it would have been more Earth-friendly to actually use used coffee filters and let the coffee be a natural dye. If you add nutmeg to the grounds, not only do you get a spiced drink but it turns the filter an earthy red-brown.

Dolce & Gabbana FW2010 Dolce & Gabbana FW2010 Dolce & Gabbana FW2010

I'm loving the dark, girly direction in D&G's Fall Collection. The mix of lace and grays remind of dark, gothic Victorian movies with wrought iron fences and cameo brooches. The polka dots also bring to mind pearls - classy and elegant. Is anyone else noticing the trend flow getting more and more feminine? Should we bask in our girliness? *smooths out skirt* Can you call yourself a feminist if you're addicted to pearls and ribbons? That's another blog...

Style.com Get the Look, Lesbian, Soft Butch My sister gets onto me for "making things gay" by seeing hidden gay undertones in TV or ads that don't really exist, or so she says they don't. Take this Get the Look pic from Style.com - the first thing I thought when I saw this was "Wow! She looks like a cute lesbian." The whole look gives me a lesbian vibe, like this girl could be a straight up futch (that's lez-speak for feminine butch or soft butch). I'm not playing when I say that I've seen that look at the local lesbian clubs during the summer. The caption reads "What to Buy to Make her Tough but Sweet Style Your Own" ... "tough but sweet" lol I think that's what a lot of girls are looking for in girlfriends, I know I do.

[SHOP GEEK] Here's to the crazy ones... The misfits...

The round pegs in the square holes...

I swear I was actually doing my job at work when I found this on Google. So, of course, my spazzy inner geek had to click thru and find out who or what made this epitome of neon geek fashion. I'll never be the poster girl for Gaming Geek, but I do enjoy old school consoles like the original Gameboy Color and Atari. Since I started blogging and going to fashion events, however, my PS2 has been collecting dust. Oh, The Shame!

Anyway, the awesome online store that sells this eclectic accessory, Chez Rone, also carries other quirky fashions referred to as "Streetwear Glam".

The banner on the front page greets you with a scandalous assertion: PRETTY CHICKS ONLY! So do you consider yourself pretty enough to shop here? Sure do! Especially with sunglasses like these - not completely functional but if you can keep from bumping into people at the mall, you'll be the coolest person there.

The boutique carries only Indie brands that would appeal to the "dope girls/nerdy chicks/glam divas/barbie bitchs" so if you find yourself in these general categories (I already check off two), check them out.

Be prepared that while it's not super-expensive, it's still not Forever21 with their $9.99 leggings. Accessories like the neon ring start at $10 while some pieces can go upwards of $150. The cute pink shoes above are $72 while the shirts below run $20-35 so it's completely up to you.

I'm very much considering these three as an outfit. My GF loves the written word so much, those tights would probably excite her (>_<) LOL.
